The Race in the A.L. East
The Tampa Bay Rays have been trying to fight off the Boston Red Sox in the A.L. East. Entering tonights game the Rays lead over the Red Sox was only a game and half. The Rays would look to extend their lead and the Red Sox would look to take the lead. The Red Sox would score first on a Kevin Youkilis double which would score Dustin Pedroia. Putting the the Red Sox up by one.
Nobody would would score in the 2nd inning. Tampa would stike early in the 3rd inning. The first batter up would bunt down the third base line and reach first safely. The second batter would be walked. Making putting runners on first and second. The next batter up was Carlos Pena which would also be walked, making the bases loaded. Cliff Floyd would step up to the plate only to be hit by a pitch, which would score the runner from third. A sacrifice fly would score another run and the 3rd inning would end with the score 2-1 with the Rays on top.
The Rays would score another run in the 4th inning. Making the score 3-1 going into the bottom of the 4th inning. The Red Sox would pull within one of the Rays with a homerun. His 16th of the season. Nobody would score in the 5th, 6th, or 7th inning. In the bottom of the 8th the Red Sox would go up by one run wih a Kevin Youkilis walk and a homerun by Jason Bay. His 29th of the season. The Rays would answer though in the top of the 9th with a Dan Johnson. His first of the season.
Tieing the score at 4-4. The next batter would line out to center field. Fernando Perez would double to left. The next batter up would also double scoring Perez and putting the Rays up by one. The Red Sox were unable to answer in the bottom of the 9th. The Red Sox were unable to gain anything on the Rays.
The Rays would extend their half of game lead to a game and a half. They will play each other tomorrow at 7:05 on ESPN. After their game tomorrow the Rays will open a series against the Yankees and the Red Sox will open a series with Toronto.
