Can Culpepper Help The Lions?

Published by bertman at 6:02 pm under NFL Edit This

The Detroit Lions bench John Kitna and sign free agent Daunte Culpepper to a 2 year contract. This coming after Culpepper didn’t get picked up by any team during the preseason and was going to retire, not to mention he hasn’t played or even suited up since last year the Lions think that he will be able to help this team win. Something they haven’t done all season.

Culpepper spent most of his career with the Minnesota Vikings until a knee injury ended his run there. He then spent time with the Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins this past 2 seasons. In Minnesota Culpepper had one of the leagues best wide receivers in Randy Moss and now he will go to a team with one good receiver(Calvin Johnson) after the Lions traded Roy Williams to Dallas. Calvin Johnson should be seeing a lot more passes come his way with Culpepper running the show.

But how good will 31 year old Culpepper be? Will he be somewhere around his years with the Vikings? Or will it be the more like the past 2 seasons with Miami and Oakland? One thing is for sure he will be better than John Kitna.

When Tom Brady went down in the first week of the season I was hoping that the Patriots would look into Culpepper, but they stuck with Matt Cassel. Could you imagine a reuniting of Moss and Culpepper? No where near a Brady/Moss connection, but it would have been better than a Cassel/anybody connection.

Back to the Lions. This is a team in need of some help and they think it will come with the acquisition of Daunte Culpepper. A 31 year old veteran and a 3 time pro bowler. This has to be one of the best things the Lions have done in a long time, but they still have a long way to got to even be able to compete with the worst of the NFL more less the best.
